John Mullaney:

My involvement with BCN and radio started one fateful day when I was sitting at my parents house in Concord listening to all sorts of technical difficulties on the air while Duane was flying around in the Duane plane. Being a bit of a radio hobbyist I knew the frequencies radio stations used for remote broadcasts and with a quick search of them I quickly locked onto the signal. The thing was I was getting him great from the plane while the studios where having all sorts of problems with reception. I called the listener line and they put me on the phone with Marc Gordon (Duane’s producer and and engineer). I told him I could connect my scanner to my phone if they needed better reception. He explained the feed would not be broadcast quality over the telephone which I agreed but reminded him I was getting him great and they where not. He thanked me and hung up. About 15 minutes later just about as I was to leave the house he called me and told me to hook it up and leave it hooked up. For the next few hours the Duane Plane show was relayed from my scanner in Concord over the air and the rest is just history. A few weeks later I was helping with the Duane Glasscock shows in studio and several years later I was engineering all of BCN’s remotes. Got to help with many local live music broadcasts first with Starfleet studios and the GBH mobile unit then launched my own remote broadcast company. Even became the Red Sox and Bruins home radio engineer for many years. Looking back I sometime don’t know whether to sue or thank Charles for the rollercoaster ride that one fateful day kicked off. But that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!
